Pre-Dynastic Egypt, Naqada II, circa 3500-3100 BC. A large and beautiful burnished black-top red pottery vase. The iconic pottery type from the period! The vessel has a highly-burnished, earthy-red hued surface with a thin iron-oxide slip. Coil-formed from Nile silt, the vessel has a conical body with a slightly curved base, gently tapered walls, wide mouth with a rolled rim. The upper blackened portion was comprised of thick carbon deposits formed by subjecting the top to dense smoke for extended periods of time in a low oxygen environment. The Naqada sites were first catalogued by archaeologist William Flinders Petrie, primarily focused around the site of El-Amra in central Egypt, west of the Nile. See similar examples at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, registration #36.1.4 and #26.2.328 for type. Measures 8 1/2" x 4 3/8". Expertly repaired long ago from 3 original fragments. Very old newspaper wrapping still stuffed inside. Ex old UK private collection, acquired in the 1940s; ex Rolf Kaier, Helios Gallery, UK. A lovely example of what many consider one of the finest pottery types ever produced in Egypt! #TF012: $2400
