Ancient Egyptian "Mummy-Bead" Jewelry
Dynasty XXVI, circa 664 -- 535 BC

These colorful beads were individually crafted in ancient times out of clay-like faience. This normally plain-colored material turned vibrant shades of yellow, green, turquiose, red, brown, auburn, orange, and blue when fired. When a person was laid to rest, these beads were woven into intricate net-like shrouds depicting the deceased in youth, gods, animals and other motifs. These shrouds were then laid across the sarcophagus before the tomb was finally closed. Over the centuries, the original twine which held the beads together decomposed and the tombs were eventually buried in the desert sand. These beads come from the Simonian family collection, Switzerland, acquired in the 1960's.

The beads have been re-strung on sturdy flexible wire with sterling silver clasps and findings, and are perfectly wearable. I can make custom bead necklaces using original amulets and udjats. Please contact me for details!

Extremely Fine Ancient Egyptian Scarab Necklace and Earrings
Ancient Egypt, 3rd Intermediate Period, c. 1075 - 664 BC. Nice and very large faience scarab, set into a choice gold brooch. The scarab's glaze now a deep purplish-black and well-molded with good detail. On the base, a seated monkey before a large Wedjat, or 'Eye of Horus'. The scarab is set in a modern gold setting, 30-40 years old, stamped 14k in Arabic numbers. 34 x 23mm. In great condition and a very attractive jewelry item! Excellent Egyptian necklace with faience and gold beads. The thick bright blue faience tube beads are ancient, 3rd Intermediate to Late Period (c. 1070 - 525 BC). They are strung with gold plated beads, modeled after an ancient Egyptian original type, the clasp also gold plated and in the form of Wedjats, or 'Eyes of Horus'. Length: 20" (28.9 cm).
