Greek Geometric-period Bronze Artifacts
Ancient Thrace, c. 3rd Century BC. Nice large bronze forepart of a Thracian bronze lion. With open mouth, the top of the mane, eyes and whiskers detailed with incising, the base of the mane indicated above the front legs. Well preserved with a glossy green patina and nice surface. Ancient Greece, c. 4th-2nd century BC. Magnificent and large stone lion-headed water spout. Depicts the head of a lion, with deep-set, piercing eyes. Its mouth is open and hollow to allow water to pour through. Likely once adorned an ancient public or ritual bath. It shows heavy use... the area below the spout heavily worn away after years (centuries?) of use. Mounted on wood base. 114 mm (4 inches) tall. Collected by Mr. and Mrs. Wilton Gaefe in the 1950's while establishing NATO bases in Turkey and Greece. This was part of the estate of Retired LTC Wilton Gaefe, who retired from the military in 1962. An excellent display piece! #AG2099: $450 SOLD

Ancient Greece, c. 4th-1st century BC. Two gold leaves from a victor's laurel wreath! Of the type awarded to an athlete during the Olympic games or other similar event. Made of sheet gold with linear impressed details. One leaf long and straight, the other a bit crumpled at the end. 36 and 30 mm (1 7/16" and 1 3/16") respectively. Weigh just .19 grams together. Ancient Greece, c. 3rd-2nd century BC. Great ceramic foot from a larger statue. Finely detailed toes, the bottom of the robes still visible. The flat bottom shows fragment of its original base. Nice color with some original white slip and light earthen deposits. 5 cm (2 inches) long. Likely from a statue of a Greek philosopher. Collected by Mr. and Mrs. Wilton Gaefe in the 1950's while establishing NATO bases in Turkey and Greece. Ancient Greece, c. 5th-3rd century BC. Fantastic bronze face of a Gorgon. Depicted facing, with wide, expressive eyes, protruding nose and nice mouth with round cheeks. Hair indicated with rows of punched-circles. Flat back, with one bronze spur off to the side. Originally part of a larger vessel. Measures 26 mm (1 inch) across.
