Ancient Rings. Circa 2nd Century BC -- 8th Century AD.
All throughout the ancient world, citizens and senators wore rings on their fingers. They portrayed legionary rank or status, mythological scenes, religious iconography, depictions of animals or gods, inverse imagery (signet or seal rings), or simple, hand-carved linear or floral designs.
As with coins and other commonly discovered artifacts, rings were lost, dedicated as offerings in temples, stolen and hoarded by raiding barbarians, or buried with the dead.
Today, these rings are found in great numbers throughout the ancient world. The rings offered here were discovered with metal detectors and by construction crews and farmers wthroughout Thrace, Macedonia, and Syria.
