Ancient Roman North Africa. Early Christian period, c. 350 – 390 AD. Excellent Roman Terra Sigillata pottery fragment. Thick in construction, this was undoubtedly part of a large and important bowl or vase. High relief detail depicting a hunting or gladiatorial scene showing a lion and bear attacking a deer, decorative elements around. Roman North Africa, c. 5th Century AD. Large Red-ware pottery sherd with a Gladiator or Saint. The figure shown on left, wearing tunic, circular decoration around, Next to this is a large 6-pointed floral star with diamond and circular decorations around. Big 100x74 mm (3 7/8" x 2 5/8") and thick! Originally part of a massive plate or platter. Very nicely detailed. Unpublished! A large and impressive display piece. Ancient Roman North Africa, c. 5th Century AD. Incredible Roman redware ceramic fragment from the famous Achilles scene! It depicts a wonderfully detailed child holding hands with his mother, a tree and temple behind them. This is a fragment from a large and richly decorated lanx (rectangular platter). The original lanx would have been impressively large, the border decorated with scenes from the life and triumphs of Achilles during the time of the Trojan War. See Herrmann & Van Den Hoek, "Light in the Age of Augustine", plates 78-79 for various scenes from this lanx. Depicts two gladiators fighting. One with a long spear, the other with a sword and shield. One fallen gladiator in the background.

Roman North Africa, c. 4th-5th Century AD. Red-ware terracotta discus lamp with a large Chi-Rho (Christogram) depicted in the discus. The shoulder is decorated with small impressed lines and circles. Though the nozzle is lost, we can see that a channel would have run between the disc and nozzle, edged by ridges. There is a maker's mark on the underside in the form of a Silphium seed. The seed takes the form of the traditional heart shape and was used in antiquity as a seasoning and medicine. Silphium was also an important trade item for the North African city of Cyrene, which may place this lamp as being made in the city of Cyrene. L: 3 7/8" (10 cm). Roman North Africa, 350 - 420 AD. Large and detailed red ware fragment. One half of decorative wall tile, depicting a lion, ibex, and foot of either a hunter, persecuted Christian, or gladiator within a border of fleurons as seen around the shoulders of red-ware lamps of the same period, the outer edges of the tile with hatches between parallel lines. 4 1/2 in x 2 5/8 in (11.4 x 6.7 cm). Roman North Africa, AD 350 - 420. Beautiful Roman red-ware shard depicting wedding of Thetis and Peleus. A woman dances and plays the castanets, with another musician plays the pan pipes. 3 3/4" x 2" (9.7 x 5 cm). Published in Cornelius Vermeule's Light from the Age of Augustine p. 75, no. 75 (this piece); cf. Garbsch and Overbeck 1989 fig. 194. This fragment belonged to Cornelius C. Vermeule who was the curator of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. This piece has also been published in Light from the Age of Augustine by John J. Herrmann Jr. and Annewies Van Den Hoek; Ex Northern California private collection. #AR2676: $499

The central medallion shows the forward-facing bust of a Victor (champion) being venerated by 2 Victories on globes holding palm branches over his head. The other medallions show the sun-god Sol riding a quadriga (chariot drawn by 4 horses) facing front. Between the medallions are images of Victory holding a palm branch, over the small busts of dignitaries. Large 85x60 mm (3 3/8” x 2 3/8”).
