Ancient Fossilized Ammonites!
Jurassic through Cretaceous periods, c. 163-66 million years ago

Ammonites were cephalopods, and were fed upon by mosasaurs and other large sea-dwelling dinosaurs. They went extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs (the Cretaceous-Tertiary mass extinction event). Similar to an octopus or squid, ammonites used their tentacles to ensnare prey. The ammonite’s body lived in the largest chamber of its shell, while the smaller segments were filled with air to keep the creature buoyant. They could also flood the water content of these chambers to allow them to quickly sink and hidein the event of a predator attack. After an ammonite died, its remains were fossilized in a sequence of geological processes that left some of them with vibrant iridescent surfaces as seen in the examples below. Completely natural, these examples have only been consolidated to keep the iridescent layer from flaking. Photos simply can't do these justice. The colors change as you rotate it in the light, truly impossible to truthfully capture with a camera.
