The Flavian Dynasty. Under the emperor Vespasian, Jerusalem was sacked by his son and future emperor Titus in 70 AD. The Second Temple (Herod's Temple) in Jerusalem was pillaged and burned to the ground, the Romans leaving with billions of dollars in gold, silver and the Temple treasures. The triumphal arch of Titus in the Roman Forum shows the silver trumpets and gold menorah being carted by Titus through Rome in 71 AD. The main Temple treasures were housed in a new temple, the Temple of Peace, built as a museum to show the spoils of war. The remaining tons of gold and silver were used by Vespasian to build the largest civic works project the Roman world had ever known... the Colosseum (or Flavian Amphitheater, as it was then known). Vespasian died before seeing the Colisseum finished and it was dedicated by Titus in June of 80 AD. The volcano Vesuvius had erupted, destroying Herculameum and Pompeii just months earlier, and a plague and devastating fire wiped out much of the city of Rome just months later. Exhausted by his ordeals, Titus died just one year later at age 42. Domitian, Vespasian's younger son, then took the throne and reigned for 15 years.
