Incredible Viking Battle Axe!
Viking iron battle axe head, c. 1000-1200 AD. An excellent iron “bearded” battle axe with a heavily engraved, curved blade, and heavy, reinforced poll. One face is engraved with an enigmatic pattern consisting of a central cross with triangulated forms around giving the impression of a larger, sharply-ended cross. The other face is engraved with a large checkerboard, or “hashtag” design. The bearded axe, or Skeggøx (from Old Norse Skegg, "beard", and øx, "axe") was heavily used from the 6th century onwards in Scandinavia but made most famous by the Vikings, who used these axes in battles with lethal effect. The main part of the axe blade extended below the butt of the axe, which allowed the warrior to hook onto the shields or weapons of their adversaries in one sweeping blow, and continuing the rotation bringing the heavy axe down upon them. Measures 24 x 9.7 cm (9 1/2” x 3 3/4”), and weighs a whopping 3 lbs, 7.4 oz (1.6kg.). With a somewhat jinky custom-made wood stand. For more information on Viking axes, see Hubbard, B. (2016) The Viking Warrior. London: Amber Books Ltd, 139-141. Ex Oxfordshire, UK art historian collection; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1990s and purchased on the UK art market. * More photos available upon request! #WP2804: $1650

Awesome Viking Battle Axe!
Viking iron battle axe head, c. 1000-1200 AD. An excellent iron “bearded” battle axe with a wide, curved blade, and heavy, reinforced poll. Measures 130mm x 190mm. For more information on Viking axes, see Hubbard, B. (2016) "The Viking Warrior", London: Amber Books Ltd, 139-141 and H. Arbman, Birka I: Die Gruber, Uppsala, 1940. Ex Oxfordshire, UK art historian collection; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1990s and purchased on the UK art market. * More photos available upon request! #WP2897: $1200
