Medieval England, 14th-15th century AD. Pilgrim holy water flask made of lead. Also known as an ampulla, these lead vessels were brought from pilgrimage places as a souvenir. Some scholars have suggested that many ampullae were used in the annual springtime 'Blessing the Fields' ceremony, in which the Holy Water they contained was sprinkled on the ground to give prayer for a good harvest. Others have suggested that the ampullae were buried along with their contents for a similar purpose. Decorated with a fleur-de-lis and floral design on one side, a coat-of-arms on the other. Medieval Haarlem, c. 16th century AD. Great lead cloth seal depicting a sword! One side depicts the seal of the Dutch city of Haarlem: a sword with cross above, stars around, the other side with a cryptic symbol, possibly the number "20". 25 mm diameter, with light grey patina, light earthen deposits. Medieval Europe c. 10th - 15th Century AD. A rare and large Medieval iron pick-type tool. Formed from a single strip of iron with attachment shaft for a handle, the two narrowing ends twisted in antiquity (possibly why it was discarded in Medieval times). L: 4 1/4 in (10.8 cm).
